ACUPUNTURE

Acupuncture as part of your treatment.

You may have the option to include acupuncture as part of your treatment, acupuncture can be provided on ACC. A treatment may include physic "hands on" treatment as well as acupuncture.

Acupuncture is effective in treating:

- headaches
- chronic pain
- post-operative pain
- muscle and joint pain
- nausea
- myo-fascial trigger point pain

Acupuncture has been used by the Chinese for thousands of years with excellent results and in the last two decades has become more widely accepted by Western Medicine. As such, within our clinic your problem may be approached with a combination of both a Chinese and a Western approach.

Acupuncture is the use of needles to stimulate healing within the body and can be used in a number of ways to affect your well being.

Working at our accredited clinic our acupuncturists follow strict protocols regarding safety and hygiene
Acupuncture is most often combined with manual therapy and exercise based rehabilitation to return you to your previous level of activity or function.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works by stimulating the release of chemicals within the body that are effective for pain relief or by releasing trigger points in tight muscles. With the insertion of the needle there is increased blood flow at the base of the needle and increased blood flow assists healing. The insertion of the needle also stimulates the nervous system and through this your body releases chemicals known to assist with pain relief and healing. Acupuncture can assist with re-starting your healing response if this has slowed.

Your acupuncturist will locate the acupuncture points that relate to your problem.

With acupuncture treatment there may be a warming sensation or slight ache around the needle or at a site slightly away from the needle.

Following the acupuncture, for a short time you may feel more relaxed and a little lightheaded, tired or really like you can take on the world!

A typical first appointment time may take a little longer and you can expect an appointment time to be from between 30-45 minutes in length.

Our experienced therapists may treat you using one of the following techniques.

Methods of acupuncture:

1.Needle insertion alone.
2. Needle insertion with TENS – this is the use of an electrical current on the needle which increases stimulation into the mechanical part of the nervous system and this can increase the relief from pain.
3. Trigger point release – this is the use of a needle to relieve the tight bands palpable in muscles with the effect of relieving pain and increasing the length of the muscle and can be used to correct muscle imbalances.
4. Needle insertion with Moxa – this is the use of a Chinese herb concoction which creates a gentle warmth down the stem of the needle and increases the activity around the base of the needle.
5. Intradermal needles – very small needles that can stay taped just under the skin
6. Ear acupuncture – this uses press beads on points in the ear useful so that you can manage your condition away from the clinic (not for every case)
7. Moxa alone – moxa can be placed directly on the skin again creating a deep sense of warming in the area of the body it is placed on.
8. Cupping – the use of a suction device which aids in release of tight fascial tissue and very effective at releasing scar tissue as an alternative to deep tissue massage

It is important to let your physiotherapist know if you are pregnant, have any blood borne diseases (HIV, hepatitis, haemophilia) as these may require a change to your treatment.

As with all of our treatments you will be provided with a full explanation and be required to consent to acupuncture as a treatment option.

Please feel comfortable to ask questions of your therapist if you are at all concerned and let them know if you are not comfortable during the appointment session.
